Salerno
The city of Salerno occupies a privileged geographical position between the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento Coast. Capital of one of the largest provinces in Italy and with the enviable record of seeing around 60% of its territory protected by UNESCO with around 200 kilometers of coastline.
The name of Salerno was made famous throughout the world by the famous Salerno medical school, a center of excellence for medicine during the Middle Ages where women not only studied but also taught.Trotula de Ruggiero, Abella salernitana, Rebecca Guarna, Mercuriade, Costanza (or Costanzella) Calenda, Francesca Romana, are the most famous mulieres salernitanae, women with doctorates in the medical art.
The city's long history of excellence in the medical field is demonstrated by the title of Hippocratica civitas which it still boasts.
The Salerno seafront and urban parks
The city developed mainly along the coast being squeezed between the mountains and the sea and for this reason it has 4 seafronts. The extensive Lungomare Trieste is the main one both because it is older and because it is located in front of the historic centre. The Trieste seafront is the favorite place for Salerno residents to take a pleasant stroll or wait for the moment to board the tourist ships that crowd the two ports located in the western part. A dense presence of bars and restaurants characterize the so-called Salerno nightlife where those who love to stay up late will find opportunities for entertainment and will be able to taste the typical fish-based specialities. Public greenery is ensured by 4 main parks and a network of municipal villas. The Mercatello park, with its 10 hectares of extension, is one of the largest urban parks in Italy, in relation to the number of residents, (it connects three neighbourhoods: Mariconda, Mercatello and the Europa district); the Pinocchio park is dedicated to the little ones while the adjacent Irno park wants to play an educational as well as relaxing role; the seminar park offers spectacular views thanks to its terraces.
A stop under the tall trees of the municipal villa cannot be missed, especially in summer. The Minerva Gardens play a predominantly cultural role, the area on which they stand has been used over the centuries by the doctors of the Salerno medical school to cultivate the plants from which to draw the active ingredients necessary for the production of medicines and still today among the ancient tubs and flowerbeds it is possible to get to know plant species from different origins. The Minerva Garden also offers a herbal tea shop where you can taste decoctions, infusions, macerates, aperitifs and typical biscuits.
AMALFI
Amalfi, from where the Amalfi Coast takes its name, presents itself to tourists as a fantastic place even if its beaches, except those in front of the city, are difficult to use because they can be reached either by sea or through long stairways but in any case they are of a unique experience in close contact with nature. Its climate is Mediterranean, the patron saint is St. Andrew the Apostle.
In Amalfi you can enjoy beautiful walks along the characteristic alleys and visit the famous Duomo. The tourist offer is very varied, you can stay both in Hotels and in B&B solutions or in residences even in magnificent Villas.
For those who love walking we recommend going to the Vallone delle Ferriere, a very fascinating nature reserve behind Amalfi. You pass along streams and old factories that once produced the typical handmade paper of Amalfi.
Amalfi is located in Campania and precisely in the province of Salerno.
Let's begin the journey in the city from which the Amalfi Coast takes its name, declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. Let's try to understand what you can do.
Well, the first thing is to let yourself be taken by the magic of the alleys of Amalfi: here among the many shops you can also taste the fried fish cuoppo.
It also takes a stroll along the characteristic seafront, from here you can reach the port and admire Amalfi from its tip.
If you love reading and books, go and visit the Paper Museum located in an ancient water mill. To see at the museum: the ancient machines with which the rags were shredded; paper was made from this important raw material. The most modern machines as the 'Dutch machine'. Summer opening – from 10am to 6.30pm. Entrance fee €4.00.
Another museum that is worth visiting is that of the Arsenale della Repubblica. Characteristic is the downward slope which was used to facilitate the exit of the ships. The structure is made of stone where you will find the Museum of the Compass and of the Maritime Duchy. In summer, the Musical Amalfi becomes the stage for an exciting show. Cost of entry to the museum €4.00.
Amalfi Cathedral
The Amalfi Cathedral is certainly the most representative monument, place of worship and pillar of the Amalfi panorama.
The main monument and pride of Amalfi, the cathedral, dedicated to Sant'Andrea, has a façade with decorated mosaics and is accessed via an imposing staircase.
The entrance to the cathedral, set in the center of Amalfi, including that to the Paradiso cloister, consisting of a portico with intertwined arches, costs 3 euros and let's say that in an hour you can finish the visit, obviously you also go to the crypt where the relics of the saint are kept.
It is a spectacle to see the square below from the top of the steps, even more so in the evening when everything is lit up. I advise you not to miss the underground walkways.
Positano between breathtaking landscapes and worldliness…
Impossible to leave again, the German painter Paul Klee wrote in his diary and he was not the only artist who no longer wanted to leave Positano after crossing his path. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine a place more similar to an enchanted canvas. From the large beach the characteristic whitewashed houses climb up a steep slope offering the typical Neapolitan nativity scene appearance.
The very long stairways from the sea lead ever higher towards the two hamlets of Nocelle and Montepertuso located in places that are difficult to access precisely to defend the defenseless population from Saracen incursions. When the watchtowers signaled the arrival of the fearsome raiders, the people of Positano abandoned their indefensible homes near the sea and began the painful journey towards safety by following those paths which are now so appreciated by tourists who experience the strong emotions given by the landscapes suspended between the sea and sky
The town has a typical architecture of the Amalfi Coast where military needs have imposed stairways, porticoes, underpasses and narrow and easily defensible alleys which have now become home to small shops where the best of Positano fashion is offered, of the typical products of the local gastronomy in which the lemon occupies a place of honor and where expert craftsmen create personalized flip-flops and clogs.
Off the coast of Positano, the three islets that make up the Sirenuse (better known as Li Galli) are visible. A fascinating residence that belonged to the great Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev was built on the remains of an ancient Roman villa.
The name of the town is attributed to a miraculous fact passed down from generation to generation. An effigy of the Madonna had been loaded onto a boat. Having arrived in front of the beach of Positano, the ship could no longer move until the sailors, urged by the Madonna with the cry of "Pose, pose" left the picture of the Madonna coming from the sea on the shoreline. The miraculous event is celebrated by the coastal municipality with the inevitable fireworks on the day of the Assumption while zeppole appear on the tables to be eaten while still warm and the totani dell'Assunta, a fried squid browned with flour and egg and then fried.
Positano is certainly one of the most celebrated places on the Amalfi Coast but the other municipalities are also worth a visit, to get to know them better here is their list Praiano, Amalfi, Ravello (the city of music), Scala, Tramonti, Furore, Agerola, Minori, Maiori , Cetara, Vietri sul Mare and its ceramics
From the pier it is possible to embark to reach the island of Capri while the island of Ischia is easier to reach starting from the port of Naples by taking a hydrofoil. The Sorrento peninsula is 14 km away and Pompeii with its famous excavations is 35 km away. The Cilento and Vallo di Diano represents a destination of great interest with its famous tourist resorts. Paestum with its spectacular temples is 84 km away, Agropoli 104 km, the promontory of Palinuro with its splendid caves is 171 km away, Marina di Camerota 162 km. The beautiful tourist resorts of the Gulf of Policastro, the beaches of Sapri and Maratea
Ravello
Ravello is one of the most famous beauties of the Amalfi Coast. Known as the "City of Music", because the famous Ravello Festival takes place every year. In addition to this it hosts exhibitions, shows and cultural events of international appeal.
In the past it was a destination for important artists and intellectuals, such as the composer Wagner, who was enchanted by the gardens of Ravello. Even though it is not by the sea, Ravello is a city rich in history, art, beauty and breathtaking views.
In the enchanting setting of Ravello, accommodation is regularly sold out, as regards hotels, residences and bed & breakfasts. Its centuries-old history, the beauty of the landscape, the sea and the monuments, represent a formidable and unrepeatable cocktail.
Those who choose to visit Ravello want to admire the architectural beauty from the panoramic terrace of a large hotel, a luxury hotel, a comfortable residence or a warm and hospitable bed & breakfast.
What to see in Ravello?
Things to see:
The Duomo, in Gothic style dominates the square and is in the center of Ravello. A real "museum" full of treasures, characteristic for its bronze portal built in Constantinople in 1170. An evocative and majestic place, inside which stands a magnificent pulpit which alone is worth the visit. Absolutely worth seeing if you are in Ravello.
Gardens of Villa Cimbrone, magnificent and adorned with rare species of plants, statues and fountains. The garden paths lead to the Belvedere, which culminates in the "Terrace Towards Infinity" from where you can admire the most spectacular view of the Amalfi Coast.
Garden of Villa Rufolo, “The garden of the soul” enchanted the German composer Wagner, who found the materialization of his imagination in these places. Villa Rufolo was built in Piazza Duomo in 1200 by the Rufolo family, the most important and powerful family in Ravello.
Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium which hosts the famous Ravello Festival, unmissable for classical music enthusiasts.
The Church of Sant'Angelo dell'Ospedale, a few steps from the Duomo. The Church has a particular structure, carved inside the rock. It is little known but it is worth visiting if you want to discover the small architectural jewels of the Coast.
The Church of the Annunziata has become the symbolic image of Ravello, with its two characteristic domes shown in every postcard or image of the city. It is a monumental complex that dates back to 1200, with great architectural and stylistic charm. The sacred building is preceded by an entrance portico which has the appearance of a tunnel, created between the rock.
Church of San Giovanni: from the Romanesque period, a place where the nobility of Ravello gathered in the Middle Ages. The building is rich in decorations, with bright and magnificent colors. If you are in Ravello we recommend you visit it, especially if you are an art lover because it will excite you.
If you are a lover of Trekking we recommend: The Sentiero degli Dei: route for those who love trekking and perfect for those who want to admire the spectacular landscapes offered by the Coast. Giovanni Boccaccio, Decameron, Second Day, Fourth Novella
Ravello, the most beautiful terrace in the world
Ravello – The terraces of Villa Rufolo and Cimbrone, from which it is possible to admire a breathtaking panorama, enchanted Greta Garbo and Wagner, in whose honor the International Music Festival takes place every year, which has made Ravello the city of music in Amalfi coast.
A quiet and chic town, it was a thriving center of commercial activities between the 11th and 12th centuries. it is a terrace overlooking the sea in the Lattari Mountains, from which you can enjoy a scenario of natural beauty unique in the world.
From its viewpoints, in particular the one dedicated to the Princess of Piedmont, the Divine Coast presents itself in a dreamlike vision.
Surrounded by dazzling nature, set in a suggestive position on a rocky spur that divides the valley of the Dragone torrent from that of the Reginna torrent in one of the points with the widest view of the gulf, it dominates the blue sea of the Costa Divina from a height of 350 meters .
Ravellese is the protagonist of one of Giovanni Boccaccio's most beautiful novels in the "Decamerone": Landolfo Rufolo, noble by birth, pirate by choice, shipwrecked by fortune and, finally, by skill and good fortune, happy owner of an immense treasure.
The sketches of the Amalfi Coast that the great English painter William Turner made in 1819 are exhibited at the Tate Gallery in London. Among its art treasures, the Duomo, founded in the 12th century, takes on particular importance; Villa Rufolo, whose origins date back to the 11th century, with its indescribable flowered terraces and home to the Festival's stage overlooking the sea, and Villa Cimbrone, famous for its exciting Belvedere, from which you can enjoy the most beautiful panorama in the world ; Piazza Fontana Moresca and, completing the picture, the suggestive tangle of streets, which exude charm and capture visitors, transporting them into another dimension, that of dreams, accompanied by music even at dawn, with the traditional concert.
VIETRI ON THE SEA
How to get:
The municipality of Vietri sul Mare can be reached by car along the A30 Salerno Reggio Calabria exit Vietri sul Mare.
Vietri sul Mare is a seaside town that preserves the characteristic architectural structure of the towns of the Amalfi Coast. From the top of a terrace, located below Mount San Liberatore, it offers generous views of the Gulf of Salerno and dominates the large beach overlooking the hamlet of Marina di Vietri where the numerous bars, restaurants and clubs of various kinds are meeting places for the youth of the provincial capital which is just 5 km away. Characterizing the hamlet of Marina like the entire municipality are "the two brothers", two characteristic rocks located a short distance from the beach and an integral part of the Vietri iconography
From a geographical point of view, Vietri is the first municipality on the Amalfi Coast that the tourist encounters on his journey from Salerno to Positano (located 38 km away).
The ancient production of Vietri ceramics, offered to holidaymakers in the many shops, has given fame to this village and represents one of its main tourist attractions.
The mother church of San Giovanni Battista is the main monument of the town and at the same time the characterizing element of its sky line thanks to the refined majolica dome.
If the historic center of Vietri sul mare is worth a visit, its hamlets are no different. Perched on the mountains that embrace Vietri, they offer suggestive views and a nature that alternates chestnut, holm oak, coppice forest with terraces cultivated with vines and citrus fruits. The territory of the hamlet of Albori is largely wooded and among the many plant species present, the Pinguicola hirtifolia , a carnivorous plant, finds its natural habitat.

CETARA
At the foot of Mount Falerio, stands Cetara, one of the most characteristic towns on the Amalfi Coast.
Immune to mass tourism, Cetara is still linked to traditional economic activities such as fishing and for this reason it retains its charm as a seaside village practically intact. The connection with the sea is felt everywhere, starting from the name which could derive either from "Cetaria", (tuna fishery in Latin), or from "cetari", the fishermen or tuna traders and ending with the gastronomy where the fish is l 'prince food. Tuna and anchovies are the protagonists of Cetara cuisine whose typical dish is represented by spaghetti with anchovy sauce. This condiment is obtained from the fermentation of anchovies marinated in special containers and can be imagined as an evolution of Garum, the fish sauce that drove the ancient Romans crazy. The crystalline sea that laps the village of Cetara is a summer destination for young people from Salerno heading mainly to the beaches below the mighty watchtower. From a historical point of view, Cetara played a fundamental strategic role, its territory belonged to the republic of Amalfi and constituted its border with the principality of Salerno. For a short period of time it was even occupied by the Saracens who made it their base. From an artistic point of view, the beautiful Romanesque church dedicated to San Pietro Apostolo and the church with adjoining convent dedicated to San Francesco should be noted.

MAIORI
Maiori is one of the main municipalities on the Amalfi Coast. Since 1997, UNESCO has declared Maiori, together with the Amalfi Coast, a World Heritage Site. It rises between Capo d'Orso and the short promontory that divides it from Minori and is a splendid seaside resort located on the alluvial plain that constitutes the terminal part of the Tramonti canal, which can boast the largest tourist hotel accommodation heritage on the Amalfi Coast.
According to history, the origins of the city date back to the period of the Etruscans. The original name of Maiori was Rheginna Maior to distinguish it from the nearby town of Rheginna Minor (present-day Minori).
The City has undergone the historical events of the Divine since the times of the Ancient Amalfi Republic.
Since the Second World War, Maiori has seen notable urban expansion and boasts one of the best living standards in Campania.
After the Second World War, in the period of neo-realism, Maiori was chosen by Roberto Rossellini as the set for some of his films: Paisà, Viaggio in Italia, Miracle, The Villain Killing Machine.
The town is mainly a tourist resort and can count, in addition to a wonderful view, also on the longest beach on this stretch of coast of the Amalfi peninsula. Furthermore, Erchie is also part of the Maiori territory, a splendid village which is also a destination for many tourists.
The patron saint's day in Maiori is scheduled for August 15th when the patron saint Santa Maria a Mare is celebrated on the solemnity of the Assumption.
Another important anniversary is the Lawyer's Day, celebrated every year on the first Monday after Pentecost on the nearby Monte Falerzio.
